Still Life

Oranges oil painting by Peter Dickison, copyright, 2008.

Oranges, oil on canvas, 2008.

I painted this small still life in oil spontaneously the other evening. It is direct and frontal, without preconceptions. I did it for the pure thrill of painting, to forget all else and live within the colors. For an hour and a half, I was truly joyous.

I apologize, dear for the poor photo image quality. Rest assured it is much more vibrant in person, as paintings usually are.

Still Life, ink wash by Peter Dickison, copyright 2008.

Still Life on a Windowsill", ink wash, 2008.

I have always love ink drawing. Adding water and using brush makes it dramatic and liberating and fun like painting. As a drawing medium, it has the unique quality that it can not be erased or altered once down. It is a one shot deal. This is a challenge, but the immediacy lends ink wash a kind of life force. I must to put it down on the paper with conviction. This little still life in a window was done quickly, in a few minutes.
