Ivy, the Artist's Daughter, conté drawing, 2018

I paint and draw portraits from life- a subject sitting before me so that I can watch a living person and examine them, including all the things the person does when not intentionally posing. I do not draw from photographs, though photography is a wonderful portrait medium.  I would rather surreptitiously make a hastily scribbled sketch of a person waiting in line for coffee than copy a photograph of the person. In fact, I have many sketchbook portraits done on trains and buses. They are thoroughly enjoyable to make even though I disguise my intent and gaze.
